The RAY DIVING diving centre operates at two locations along the Norwegian coast. When the summer season is over (at the end of September), the whole diving base moves from the Rangoya peninsula to the northernmost part of Norway – to the Norwegian Lofoten Islands (Westfjord). From here, we organise trips to larges predator of our planet – Orca.
The most suitable part of year to observe the orcas is half of October to end of November. During this time, the Norwegian sea is cooling down and this change of temperatures creates optimal condition for spawning herrings, which are a very desirable and mainly very easy prey for the orcas, huge flocks of seagulls,
codfish and fishermen, who hunt the herrings in nets.
It is a unforgettable experience to observe an orca as it thoughtfully and in a systematic way hunts down such an easy prey, as is the herring school.
The RAY DIVING centre provides boat trips to these predators. During these tours, you will get so close to them that you can easily capture the spirit if the moment by a camera or video camera. Those wishing to peek under the sea level watch the orcas in their natural environment will also have an opportunity to do so.
The killer whales, despite being the larges predator in all seas and oceans, senses the divers in her proximity with great accuracy and does not attack him. In the Norwegian sea, where these predators are regularly observed, not even a single case of orca attack on a human occurred. The water temperature around the time of orca watching reaches 8 °C, the air temperature ranges from –5 °C in the morning till + 15 °C in the sun. In this time of year, the sun rises for only 5-6 hours. Therefore it is necessary to be equipped with a dry diving suit. The orcas are watched from the sea level, with only tha basic diving ABC equipment (mask, snorkel, flipper).
The fastest way is by flight from Prague to Narvik (eventually to Harstad) with a change-over in Oslo. The flight including the change-over takes around 3 hours, so it is possible to visit us also during an extended weekend. Our representative will pick you up at Narvik (Harstad) airport and drive you to the RAY DIVING centre, where accomodation is provided. If you wish to combine orca watching with diving, we recommend spending a whole week at the location.
A travel by car is more interesting than a flight. The drive from Prague takes around 3 – 4 days, its length being approximately 3500 km. The beautiful Nowegian country offers awesome views during this trip.
